Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40%-50% absorption whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Most adverse reactions observed in clinical trials were mild and self-limiting
- Frequent gastrointestinal disturbances including diarrhea and stool changes
- Hypersensitivity reactions observed
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
