Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be extended up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for severity of infection
  • Dosage for children based on weight and age
  • Dosage adjustments needed for elderly and patients with renal impairment

Interaction

  • May increase prothrombin times in patients on anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Commonly seen side effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, rash, thrombocytopenia
  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited data on use during pregnancy, caution advised
  • Not known whether excreted in human milk, caution advised for nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution advised in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
  • Caution in patients with renal impairment and on penicillin-sensitive patients

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
  • No specific antidote available
  • Adverse reactions similar to recommended doses reported in healthy adult volunteers

Dosage in Renal Impairment
