Mode of Action

Bactericidal activity interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment: 7 days (can be extended up to 14 days)
  • Adults and children over 10 years: 200-400 mg daily
  • Elderly: Same dose as recommended for adults
  • Children: 8 mg/kg/day
  • Typhoid in children: 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
  • Renal Impairment: Adjusted dosage based on creatinine clearance

Interaction

Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients; caution with anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Gastric Lavage may be indicated; no specific antidote exists
