Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections

- Effective against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organism
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7-14 days
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended children dosage along with age-based volume guidelines
- Dose adjustment in patients with renal impairment
Interaction
- May increase prothrombin times in some patients
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mostly mild and self-limiting
- Frequent side-effects: diarrhea, stool changes
- Other side-effects: nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, allergies, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
- Pseudomembraneous colitis reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised during nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Particular caution for penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal colon flora may occur
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed significantly by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
