Indications

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Clinical efficacy against Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Clinical efficacy against Escherichia coli
  • Clinical efficacy against Proteus mirabilis
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms

Pharmacology

  • Third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Oral administration
  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • 40-50% absorption whether administered with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Adult dose: 200-400 mg daily
  • Children's dose: 8 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage adjustments in severe renal impairment
  • Dosage based on age & severity of infection

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times in some patients
  • Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administer with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alteration of normal flora of the colon
  • Avoid use in pregnancy or in nursing mothers unless essential

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
