Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Effective against commonly occurring pathogens

Pharmacology

  • Third-generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • About 40% to 50% absorption rate

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended dosage for adults and children over 10 years
  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
  • Dosage recommendations for children in terms of volume of suspension
  • Safety and efficacy not established in children aged less than 6 months

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times in few patients
  • Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Diarrhoea and stool changes
  • Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Allergies in the form of rash, pruritis, urticaria
  • Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
  • Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
  • Genital pruritis and vaginitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Cautious use in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Use with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Altering normal flora of the colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhoea

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
