Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in presence of beta-lactamase enzyme

Dosage and Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended dosage for adults: 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times
  • Care with patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
  • Frequent gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Central nervous system effects
  • Hypersensitivity reactions

  • Alteration of normal flora of the colon

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Adverse reactions in healthy volunteers at high doses similar to recommended doses
