Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
- Clinical efficacy against various pathogens
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- 40-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may continue up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage 200-400 mg daily for severity of infection
- Recommended child dosage 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage adjustments for renal impairment
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
- Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
- Frequent side effects include diarrhea and stool changes
- Other side effects like nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
