Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)

Pharmacology
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approximately 40-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual 7-day course of treatment
- Can be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended children dosage: 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage adjustments for severe renal impairment
- Recommended dosage for children in typhoid: 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily

Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
- Care needed in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Mild and self-limiting gastrointestinal disturbances
- Diarrhea and stool changes
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia
- Headache and dizziness
- Allergies in the form of rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data on use in pregnant women
- Caution advised during pregnancy
- Caution advised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution needed for patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Special caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alters the normal flora of the colon
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
