Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
  • Efficacy against Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Efficacy against Escherichia coli
  • Efficacy against Proteus mirabilis
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Approximately 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual 7-day course of treatment
  • Can be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended children dosage: 8 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage adjustments for severe renal impairment
  • Recommended dosage for children in typhoid: 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily
  • Dosage considerations for renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
  • Care needed in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self-limiting gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Diarrhea and stool changes
  • Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Allergies in the form of rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
  • Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited data on use in pregnant women
  • Caution advised during pregnancy
  • Caution advised when administered to nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution needed for patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Special caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alters the normal flora of the colon
  • Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
