Indications
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic

Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40% to 50% absorption
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 to 14 days
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
- Specific recommended daily doses for children based on age
- Different dosage for typhoid
- Dosage adjustments for elderly and renal impairment
Interaction
- Observation of increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Caution with patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Common gastrointestinal disturbances: diarrhea and stool changes
- Less frequent gastrointestinal side-effects: nausea, abdominal pain, etc.
- Central nervous system effects: headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritus, urticaria, etc.
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, etc.
- Other possible reactions: genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution with administration to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Potential alteration of normal flora of the colon and overgrowth of clostridia
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- No significant removal from circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in small numbers of healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g
