Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Complete the usual course of 7 days
- Increased prothrombin times in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
- Generally well tolerated with mild and self limiting adverse reactions
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
- Storage below 30°C, protected from light & moisture
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children of 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage in renal impairment
- Dosage of 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily in typhoid
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Severe reactions in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
Side Effects
- Mild and self limiting gastrointestinal disturbances
- Pseudomembraneous colitis
- Central nervous system side effects like headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions in the form of rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever, and arthralgia
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions like thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and eosinophilia
- Mild and reversible transient changes in liver and renal function tests
- Miscellaneous reactions including genital pruritis and vaginitis
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in small numbers of healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g
