Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Effective against Escherichia coli
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40%-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued for up to 14 days
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, single or divided doses
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
- Special dosage for typhoid infection in children
- Dosing adjustments for elderly and patients with renal impairment
Interaction
- Possible increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Caution needed in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and stool changes

- Alteration of normal colon flora and potential for antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
- Should not be used in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless essential
