Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumonia
- Effective against Streptococcus pyogenes
- Effective against Escherichia coli
- Effective against Proteus mirabilis
- Effective against Klebsiella species
- Effective against Haemophilus influenzae
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40-50% absorption rate with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- May be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage range: 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
- Individualized dosages for different age groups and conditions
- Special dosage for typhoid
- Dosage adjustments for renal impairment
Interaction
- Potential increases in prothrombin times in some patients
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system effects: headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects
- Other possible reactions include genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Cautious use during pregnancy if clearly needed
- Caution exercised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Potential for antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Low removal from circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in small numbers of healthy volunteers receiving high doses
