Description

  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Indicated for upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections
  • Clinical efficacy against commonly occurring pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, E. coli, Klebsiella species, etc.
  • Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Usual course of treatment is 7-14 days
  • Adverse reactions observed in clinical trials were mild and self-limiting

  • Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection
  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
  • Dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Recommended dosage for typhoid
  • Dosage in renal impairment
  • Absorption not significantly modified by the presence of food

Interactions

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients, especially in those receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mostly mild and self-limiting gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, etc.
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity reactions in the form of rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry effects like thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
  • Mild transient changes in liver and renal function tests
  • Miscellaneous possible reactions including genital pruritis and vaginitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution recommended during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Should be given with caution to patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
  • Special caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Use in pregnancy and lactation only if considered essential by the physician

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Adverse reactions in healthy volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at recommended doses
