Indications

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Escherichia coli
  • Proteus mirabilis
  • Klebsiella species
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Enterobacter species

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal activity
  • Interference in bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Plasma concentration
  • Absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment of 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Renal function assessment for elderly patients
  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Potential increase in prothrombin times in some patients
  • Caution with anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Altered normal flora of colon
  • Primary cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea by Clostridium difficile toxin

Overdose Effects

  • Potential need for Gastric Lavage
  • No specific antidote available
  • Minimal removal by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
