Indications
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) treatment
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections treatment
- Urinary Tract Infections treatment
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption of about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection
- Dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Recommended dosages for different age groups
- Special dosage in typhoid and Renal Impairment
- Not recommended for children aged less than 6 months
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in some patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Gastrointestinal disturbances, including diarrhoea and stool changes
- Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions like rash, pruritis, urticaria, and drug fever
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects
- Miscellaneous reactions like genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Partial cross-allergenicity with penicillins
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
- Not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at recommended doses
