MicroorganismsSusceptibility

  • Microorganisms susceptible to Odacef include Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella species, Haemophilus influenzae
  • Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

ModeOfAction

  • Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria

Absorption

  • Absorption of Cefixime is about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food

Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses

InteractionAnticoagulant

  • Increases in prothrombin times

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated; otherwise, no specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
