Therapeutic Class

  • Third generation Cephalosporins

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) e.g. otitis media
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections e.g. bronchitis
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections e.g. cystitis, pyelonephritis

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be extended up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for severe infections
  • Dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses

Interaction

  • Potential increase in prothrombin times in some patients

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Diarrhea, stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, rash, pruritis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity
  • Administer with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated in cases of overdose
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
