Description
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Indicated for treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI), Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Urinary Tract Infections, and more
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily, dosage for children based on age and weight, dosage in renal impairment, dosage in typhoid, and dosage for patients on chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Absorption about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
- Common side effects include diarrhea, stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, rash, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and more
- Use with caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs, penicillin-sensitive patients, and markedly impaired renal function
- No specific antidote exists for overdose, not significantly removed by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
