Description

  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of bacteria

Mode of Action

Dosage & Administration

  • Absorption not significantly modified by the presence of food
  • Usual course: 7 days, extendable up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, single dose or in two divided doses

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times observed in some patients
  • Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
  • Most frequent side-effects: diarrhea and stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution required during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution required in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Administration with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Profix not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
