Treatment Uses
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) e.g. otitis media
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections e.g. bronchitis
- Urinary Tract Infections e.g. cystitis, pyelonephritis
- Infections caused by Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, and more
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40% to 50% absorption whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7-14 days
- Adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and nausea
- Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions like rash and pruritis
- Hematological and clinical chemistry changes

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Cautious use in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon and risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
- Not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
