Treatment Uses

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) e.g. otitis media

  • Infections caused by Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, and more

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • About 40% to 50% absorption whether administered with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7-14 days
  • Adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times in some patients
  • Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and nausea
  • Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like rash and pruritis
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry changes

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution in nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Cautious use in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alteration of normal flora of the colon and risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
  • Not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
