Description
Saver is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and other acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for adults and children over 10 years; 8 mg/kg/day for children
- Dosage in Renal Impairment: Normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater
Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections and lower respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Treatment of urinary tract infections caused by commonly occurring pathogens
Mode of Action
Cefixime is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration with bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall.
Interaction
Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients; caution should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
Patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

- Diarrhoea and stool changes
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, and flatulence
- Headache and dizziness
- Rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever, and arthralgia
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not enough studies in pregnant women; caution should be exercised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients due to evidence of partial cross-allergenicity
Overdose Effects
Gastric Lavage may be indicated; no specific antidote exists; Saver is not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
