Pharmacology

  • Cefixime is bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Absorption is about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses
  • Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
  • Dosage in Renal Impairment: Normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater
  • Treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics alters the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhoea, stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence)
  • Central nervous system effects (headache, dizziness)
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (allergies, rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia)
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions (thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia)
  • Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
  • Miscellaneous reactions (genital pruritis, vaginitis)

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings
