Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40%-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, extendable up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage 200-400 mg daily according to infection severity
- Dosage for children varying by age and weight
- Caution in elderly and patients with impaired renal function
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in few patients
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Commonly observed gastrointestinal disturbances: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system effects: headache, dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
- Possible genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution advised for use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Cephalosporin should be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
