Description

  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Indication

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall

Dosage administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may continue for up to 14 days if required
  • Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, as single dose or in two divided doses
  • Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times observed in some patients

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side effects

  • Mostly mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
  • Frequent side effects: diarrhoea, stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain
  • Less frequent side effects: headache, dizziness, allergies, thrombocytopenia

Pregnancy lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administer with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose effects

  • Gastric lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
