Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Treatment for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) like otitis media, and other known or suspected resistant infections
- Treatment for Lower Respiratory Tract Infections like bronchitis
- Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections including cystitis, cystourethritis, and pyelonephritis
- Clinical efficacy against commonly occurring pathogens including Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and others
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption of about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
- Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage adjustment for elderly and children
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Increased prothrombin times noted in a few patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
- Generally well tolerated with majority of adverse reactions observed in clinical trials being mild and self-limiting
- Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, and hematological and clinical chemistry impacts
- Limited information on use in pregnancy and lactation, caution advised
- Given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs, penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics may alter normal flora of the colon and permit overgrowth of clostridia
- Gastric lavage may be indicated in case of overdose, no specific antidote exists
