Indications

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Clinical efficacy against common pathogens
  • Marked bactericidal activity
  • Treatment of acute infections
  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against wide spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Kills bacteria by interfering in cell wall synthesis
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage for children based on body weight
  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
  • Elderly patients dosage
  • Dosage in typhoid

Interaction

  • Potential increase in prothrombin times
  • Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
  • Frequent: diarrhea, stool changes
  • Less frequent: nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness
  • Possible hypersensitivity reactions
  • Reports of hematological and clinical chemistry reactions
  • Miscellaneous reactions like genital pruritus and vaginitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution in nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Altered normal flora of colon with antibiotic use
  • Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed significantly by dialysis
