Indications
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against wide spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Kills bacteria by interfering in cell wall synthesis
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- 40-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children based on body weight
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Elderly patients dosage
- Dosage in typhoid
Interaction
- Potential increase in prothrombin times
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Frequent: diarrhea, stool changes
- Less frequent: nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness
- Possible hypersensitivity reactions
- Reports of hematological and clinical chemistry reactions
- Miscellaneous reactions like genital pruritus and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Altered normal flora of colon with antibiotic use
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed significantly by dialysis
