Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7-14 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children based on age and weight
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
Interaction
- Potential increase in prothrombin times in some patients
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Adverse reactions include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes, mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Consideration of cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea

- Gastric lavage may be indicated in overdose
