Indications
- Treats URTI, bronchitis, urinary tract infections
- Marked bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage and administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Elderly patients may be given the same dose as recommended for adults
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage in renal impairment
- No established safety and efficacy in children aged less than 6 months
Interaction
- May increase prothrombin times in some patients
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side effects
- Mostly mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Frequent side-effects: diarrhea, stool changes
- Less frequent side-effects: nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, rash, pruritis, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
- Reports of pseudomembranous colitis
Pregnancy and lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution when administered to nursing women
Precautions and warnings
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Avoid use in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in small numbers of healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at the recommended doses

- Not prescribed to treat diarrhoea.
- Safety not established in infants less than 6 months.

- No evidence of interaction with contraception.
- No clinically proven interactions with Acetaminophen (Paracetamol).
- Starts working as soon after ingestion. Completion of the medication course is advised.
