Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- 40%-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment for 7 days, may continue for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Recommended dosage for children in different age groups
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution during administration to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alters the normal flora of the colon
- Use not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
