Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • 40%-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment for 7 days, may continue for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
  • Recommended dosage for children in different age groups

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
  • Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution during administration to nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alters the normal flora of the colon
  • Use not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
