Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days
- Adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to severity of infection
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered in single or divided doses
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
- Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects like thrombocytopenia and leukopenia
- Allergic reactions in the form of rash, pruritis, and urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated; otherwise, no specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities from circulation by dialysis
