Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections

  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive organisms

  • Effective against Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Effective against Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Effective against Escherichia coli
  • Effective against Proteus mirabilis
  • Effective against Klebsiella species
  • Effective against Haemophilus influenzae
  • Effective against Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Effective against Enterobacter species
  • Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Oral administration
  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
  • About 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • May be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly and children
  • Dosage based on severity of infection
  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in few patients
  • Care required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution advised in pregnancy
  • Not known to be excreted in human milk
  • Caution advised in lactating women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution advised in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution advised in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution advised in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alters normal flora of the colon
  • May permit overgrowth of clostridia

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
