Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily for adults and children over 10 years
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea and stool changes
- Central nervous system effects such as headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions like rash, pruritis, and urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions including thrombocytopenia and leukopenia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution with penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Use in pregnancy and lactation should be avoided unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote exists for overdose
