Description
- An orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI), Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Urinary Tract Infections

Dose Duration
- 7 days (up to 14 days if required)
Dosage for Adults
- 200-400 mg daily (single dose or two divided doses)
Dosage for Elderly
- Same as recommended for adults; dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
Dosage for Children
- 8 mg/kg/day
- 6 months up to 1 year: 3.75 ml daily
- Children 1-4 years: 5 ml daily
- Children 5-10 years: 10 ml daily
Recommended Dosage for Typhoid in Children
- 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
Dosage for Children > 10 years or > 50 kg
- Same as recommended for adults
Renal Impairment Dosage
- 200 mg once daily if creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min

Pharmacological Action
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approx. 40%-50% absorption with or without food
Interaction with Anticoagulant Therapy
- Increases in prothrombin times

- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Cautious administration to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Cephalosporin-penicillin cross-allergenicity
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Altering normal flora of colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions similar to recommended doses seen in healthy volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g
