Description
- Xifim is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and has demonstrated clinical efficacy against various pathogens including Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and more.
DosageAndAdministration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required. Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, Children dosage: 8 mg/kg/day, dosage adjustments for renal impairment
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration, bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria, kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall, highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme, absorption about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food.
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy.

- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
SideEffects
- Mild and self limiting adverse reactions observed, including gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes, mild transient change in liver and renal function tests, other possible reactions include genital pruritis and vaginitis.
PregnancyAndLactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, caution advised for use during pregnancy, caution advised when administered to nursing women.
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs, caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to partial cross-allergenicity, caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function, use alters normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia, not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers, discontinue if allergic effect occurs.
OverdoseEffects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated, no specific antidote exists, Xifim is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
