Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption about 40% to 50% when administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued up to 14 days if required
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, given as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Frequent side effects: diarrhea and stool changes
- Less frequent side effects: nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, allergies in the form of rash, pruritus, urticaria, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
- Other possible reactions: genital pruritus, vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited studies in pregnant women, caution advised for use during pregnancy
- Caution advised for nursing women as excretion in human milk is unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Cephalosporin should be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
Overdose Effects
- Gastric lavage may be indicated, no specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in healthy adults receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from typical profile
