Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Absorption about 40% to 50% when administered with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued up to 14 days if required
  • Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, given as a single dose or in two divided doses
  • Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
  • Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
  • Frequent side effects: diarrhea and stool changes
  • Less frequent side effects: nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, allergies in the form of rash, pruritus, urticaria, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
  • Other possible reactions: genital pruritus, vaginitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited studies in pregnant women, caution advised for use during pregnancy
  • Caution advised for nursing women as excretion in human milk is unknown

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution advised with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Cephalosporin should be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage may be indicated, no specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Adverse reactions in healthy adults receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from typical profile
