Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)

Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approximately 40% to 50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
- Different recommended daily doses based on age and weight of children
- Treatment of typhoid with specific recommended children dose
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
Interaction
- Risk of increased prothrombin times in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances: diarrhea, stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain, and more
- Central nervous system effects: headache, dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
- Mild transient changes in liver and renal function tests
- Other possible reactions: genital pruritis, vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution advised for use during pregnancy
- Caution advised for use by nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised for patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution advised for penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Altered normal flora of the colon and risk of overgrowth of clostridia
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or nursing mothers
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote available
- Minimal removal from circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions observed in small number of healthy adult volunteers
