Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
  • Bactericidal Activity Against Gram-positive Organisms
  • Bactericidal Activity Against Gram-negative Organisms

Pharmacology

  • Third Generation Semisynthetic Cephalosporin Antibiotic
  • Bactericidal Against a Broad Spectrum of Bacteria
  • Interferes in the Synthesis of Bacterial Cell Wall
  • Stable in the Presence of Beta-lactamase Enzyme
  • Approximately 40-50% Absorption Rate

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual Course of Treatment is 7 Days
  • Adult Dosage 200-400 mg Daily Depending on Infection Severity
  • Elderly Patients May Receive Same Dose as Adults
  • Recommended Dosage for Children 8 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage Adjustment in Severe Renal Impairment

Interaction

  • Increases in Prothrombin Times
  • Caution in Patients Receiving Anticoagulant Therapy

Contraindications

  • Known Hypersensitivity to Cephalosporin Antibiotics

  • Caution in Penicillin-sensitive Patients
  • Administration with Markedly Impaired Renal Function

Overdose Effects

  • Not Removed in Significant Quantities by Dialysis
