Description
- Cefotaxime is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by bacteria of established sensitivity, such as septicaemia, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, soft-tissue infections, bone and joint infections, obstetric and gynaecological infections, gonorrhoea, and others.
- Cefotaxime is a broad spectrum bactericidal 3rd generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic, exceptionally active against gram-negative organisms sensitive or resistant to first or second generation cephalosporins, and similar to other cephalosporins in activity against gram-positive bacteria.
- The recommended dosage for adults with mild to moderate infections is 1 gm every 12 hours, while for children it is 100-150 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses. Dosage adjustments are necessary for severe infections, sensitive Pseudomonas spp., and gonorrhoea.
- Cefotaxime is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or cephalosporin antibiotics, and caution should be exercised in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis, and in patients with renal impairment.

- Usual dosage range for children is 100-150 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses
- Dosage adjustments may be necessary for gonorrhoea and in neonates
