Indications
- Treatment of septicaemia

Pharmacology
- Binds to penicillin binding proteins
- Inhibits transpeptidation
- Broad spectrum bactericidal
- Active against gram-negative organisms
- Active against gram-positive bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended adult dosage: 1 gm every 12 hours
- Variation of dosage based on severity of infection
- Increased dosage for severe infections
- Usual children dosage range: 100-150 mg/kg/day
- Increased children dosage for severe infections
- Neonatal dosage: 50 mg/kg/day
- Increased neonatal dosage for severe infections
- Dosage for gonorrhoea: 500 mg as a single dose
Interaction
- Increased nephrotoxicity with aminoglycoside antibiotics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or cephalosporin antibiotics
