Description
- Taxceph is a broad spectrum bactericidal 3rd generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic used for the treatment of various bacterial infections.
Indications
- Treatment of Septicaemia
- Respiratory Tract Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Soft-tissue Infection
- Bone and Joint Infections
- Obstetric and gynaecological infections
- Gonorrhoea
- Meningitis and other sensitive infections
- Prophylaxis for postoperative infections
Pharmacology
- Cefotaxime binds to penicillin binding proteins
- Inhibits final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis
- Broad spectrum bactericidal 3rd generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
Dosage and Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults: 1 gm every 12 hours for mild to moderate infections
- Variation in dosage based on severity of infection and sensitivity of causative organisms
- Increased dosage for severe infections
- Usual dosage range for children: 100-150 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses
- Recommended dosage for neonates: 50 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses
Interaction
- Increased nephrotoxicity with concomitant administration of cephalosporins and aminoglycoside antibiotics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or the cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Candidiasis
- Rashes
- Fever
- Transient rises in liver transaminase and/or alkaline phosphatase
- Diarrhoea
- Pseudomembranous colitis
- Changes in renal function
- Hypersensitivity reactions
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established
- Excreted in the milk
Precautions and Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal failure
- Extra-renal elimination observed
