Description

  • Taxceph is a broad spectrum bactericidal 3rd generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic used for the treatment of various bacterial infections.

Indications

  • Treatment of Septicaemia
  • Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Soft-tissue Infection
  • Bone and Joint Infections
  • Obstetric and gynaecological infections
  • Gonorrhoea
  • Meningitis and other sensitive infections
  • Prophylaxis for postoperative infections

Pharmacology

  • Cefotaxime binds to penicillin binding proteins
  • Inhibits final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis
  • Broad spectrum bactericidal 3rd generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic

Dosage and Administration

  • Recommended dosage for adults: 1 gm every 12 hours for mild to moderate infections
  • Variation in dosage based on severity of infection and sensitivity of causative organisms
  • Increased dosage for severe infections
  • Usual dosage range for children: 100-150 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses
  • Recommended dosage for neonates: 50 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses

Interaction

  • Increased nephrotoxicity with concomitant administration of cephalosporins and aminoglycoside antibiotics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or the cephalosporin group of antibiotics

  • Rashes
  • Fever
  • Transient rises in liver transaminase and/or alkaline phosphatase
  • Diarrhoea
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Changes in renal function
  • Hypersensitivity reactions

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Safety in human pregnancy not established
  • Excreted in the milk

Precautions and Warnings

  • Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal failure
  • Extra-renal elimination observed
