Description
- Taxim is indicated for the treatment of various infections, such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, soft-tissue infections, bone and joint infections, obstetric and gynecological infections, gonorrhea, and other bacterial infections. It can also be used for prophylaxis in certain surgical procedures.

Pharmacology
- Binds to penicillin binding proteins to inhibit peptidoglycan synthesis, resulting in bacterial cell death
- Broad spectrum bactericidal 3rd generation parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Active against gram-negative organisms sensitive or resistant to first or second generation cephalosporins
- Activity against gram-positive bacteria
Recommended Dosage for Adults
1 gm every 12 hourly for mild to moderate infections; dosage may be varied according to severity of infection, sensitivity of causative organisms, and patient's condition
Recommended Dosage for Children
100-150 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses; up to 200 mg/kg/day may be required for very severe infections
Recommended Dosage for Neonates
50 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses; 150-200 mg/kg/day in divided doses for severe infections
Dosage in Gonorrhea
500 mg as a single dose
Interaction
- Increased nephrotoxicity reported with concomitant administration of cephalosporins and aminoglycoside antibiotics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or the cephalosporin group of antibiotics

- Transient rises in liver transaminase and/or alkaline phosphatase
- Diarrhea
- Pseudomembranous colitis
- Changes in renal function
- Hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, drug fever, and rarely anaphylaxis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy; excreted in the milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
- Dosage reduction required in patients with transient or persistent reduction of urinary output due to renal insufficiency
- No clinical evidence supporting the necessity of changing the dosage in patients with profound renal dysfunction
Dosage in Renal Impairment
- Reduce the dosage of Taxim in severe renal failure; further dosage adjustment may be required in all other patients according to the course of infection and the general condition of the patient
