Description
- Treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Effective against a wide range of gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria
- Oral suspension available for ease of administration
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage for pharyngitis/tonsillitis: 100 mg 12 hourly for 5-10 days
- Pediatric dosage for acute otitis media: 5 mg/kg body weight 12 hourly for 5 days
- Patients with severe renal impairment should have dosing intervals increased to 24 hours
Mode of Action
- Good stability to beta-lactamases
- Activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
Indications
- Treatment of acute otitis media caused by various microorganisms
- Pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Community-acquired pneumonia caused by specific bacteria
- Uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Rectal gonococcal infections in women
- Urinary tract infections caused by specific bacteria
Interaction
- Concurrent administration with antacids can reduce peak plasma levels
- Probenecid can inhibit renal excretion of cefpodoxime
- Close monitoring of renal function advised when administered with nephrotoxic drugs
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, skin & vaginal fungal infection, abdominal pain
- Incidence of fungal skin rash is higher in children
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women
- Excreted in human milk, a decision required on breastfeeding or drug discontinuation
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduce total daily dose in patients with transient or persistent reduction in urinary output
- Administer with caution to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms

Reconstitution
- For ease of preparation, add water to the bottle in two portions
- Shake the suspension well before each use
- Store in a cool and dry place, preferably in the refrigerator
