Indications

Pharmacology

  • Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Stable to beta lactamases
  • Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria
  • Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
  • 29 to 33% excretion unchanged in urine

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for adults and adolescents
  • Dosage for infants and pediatric patients
  • Dosing intervals for patients with renal dysfunction
  • Dose adjustment not necessary for patients with liver cirrhosis

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, skin & vaginal fungal infection, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, cough

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Neither teratogenic nor embryocidal in animal trial
  • Limited study on pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk, decision needed for breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Reduced dose in renal insufficiency
  • Administer with caution in patients receiving potent diuretics
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
