Indications
- Acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenza, Moraxella catarrhalis
- Pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute maxillary sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis
- Community acquired pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae or H. influenza
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, or M. catarrhalis
Pharmacology
- Active metabolite is Cefpodoxime
- 29-33% excreted unchanged in urine
- Highly stable in presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- Activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria

- Dosing intervals for patients with severe renal impairment
- Dose adjustment not necessary in patients with liver cirrhosis
Interaction
- Antacids decrease peak plasma level by 24-42%
- H2 blockers reduce extent of absorption by 27-32%
- Probenecid inhibits renal excretion and increases AUC by approximately 31%
- Close monitoring of renal function advised when administered with nephrotoxic compounds
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Precautions & Warnings
- Reduce total daily dose in patients with reduction in urinary output due to renal insufficiency
- Administer with caution to patients receiving potent diuretics
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
- Repeated evaluation of the patient’s condition is essential
