Indications
- Treatment of acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenza, Moraxella catarrhalis
- Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae or H. influenza
- Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, or M. catarrhalis
- Treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes
- Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus

Pharmacology
- Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
- Stable to beta lactamases
- Activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
- Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
- Approximately 29 to 33% of Cefpodoxime excreted unchanged in the urine in 12 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for adults, adolescents, infants, and pediatric patients
- Specific dosages for pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, skin and skin structure infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infection, uncomplicated gonorrhea, rectal gonococcal infections in women
- Dosing adjustments for patients with renal dysfunction and liver cirrhosis
Interactions
- Interaction with antacids, H 2 blockers, Probenecid, and nephrotoxic drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, skin & vaginal fungal infection, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, cough
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not teratogenic or embryocidal in animal trial
- No adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced dose in patients with reduction in urinary output due to renal insufficiency
- Caution in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Possibility of overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged use
