Description

  • Taxetil DS is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms including but not limited to acute otitis media, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, skin and skin structure infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, uncomplicated gonorrhea, and rectal gonococcal infections in women.
  • Cefpodoxime is an oral 3rd generation cephalosporin with good stability to beta-lactamases and activity against a wide range of gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria. It is excreted in the urine and highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes.
  • Dosage and administration vary for adults, adolescents, infants, and pediatric patients, with specific dosing intervals for patients with renal dysfunction or liver cirrhosis.
  • Interaction with antacids, H2 blockers, probenecid, and nephrotoxic drugs may affect peak plasma level, absorption, and renal excretion of cefpodoxime. Close monitoring of renal function is advised when administered concomitantly with compounds of known nephrotoxic potential.
  • Cefpodoxime Proxetil is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to cefpodoxime or the cephalosporin group of antibiotics.
  • Side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, fungal infections, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, and cough, with a higher incidence of fungal skin rash in children.
  • Cefpodoxime was neither teratogenic nor embryocidal in animal trials, and the use during pregnancy should be decided upon careful consideration of the benefits. Cefpodoxime is excreted in human milk, and a decision should be made whether to discontinue breastfeeding or the drug.
  • Special precautions are advised for patients with transient or persistent reduction in urinary output, renal insufficiency, and those receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, requiring repeated evaluation of the patient’s condition.
  • Taxetil DS belongs to the therapeutic class of third-generation cephalosporins
  • For reconstitution of 50 ml suspension, cooled boil water should be added to the dry mixture in the bottle and the suspension should be stored in a cool and dry place, preferably in a refrigerator, and discarded after 14 days.
