Indications
- Treatment of acute otitis media caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes

Pharmacology
- Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
- Good stability to beta lactamases
- Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria
- Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults and adolescents
- Recommended dosage for infants and pediatric patients
- Dosing adjustment for patients with renal dysfunction
- No dose adjustment needed for patients with liver cirrhosis
Interaction
- Reduced peak plasma level with concomitant administration of high doses of antacids or H 2 blockers
- Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid resulting in increased AUC
- Close monitoring of renal function when administered with nephrotoxic drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, fungal infections, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, cough
- Higher incidence of fungal skin rash in children
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Neither teratogenic nor embryocidal in animal trials
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Decision should be made regarding breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Dose reduction in patients with renal insufficiency
- Caution in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
