Indications

• Treatment of acute otitis media caused by various microorganisms
• Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
• Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by specific bacteria
• Treatment of community acquired pneumonia caused by specific bacteria
• Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by specific bacteria
• Treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by specific bacteria
• Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by specific bacteria
• Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
• Treatment of rectal gonococcal infections in women caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Pharmacology

• Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
• Good stability to beta lactamases
• Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria
• Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
• Excretion of 29% to 33% unchanged in urine

Dosage & Administration

• Specific dosage for adults, adolescents, infants, and pediatric patients
• Dosing adjustment for patients with renal dysfunction
• Similar pharmacokinetics in patients with liver cirrhosis

Interaction

• Reduced plasma level and absorption when administered with antacids or H2 blockers
• Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid
• Need for close monitoring when administered with nephrotoxic drugs

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin group

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Neither teratogenic nor embryocidal in animal trial
• No adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women
• Excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Reduced total daily dose in patients with renal insufficiency
• Caution in patients receiving potent diuretics
• Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
• Repeated evaluation of patient's condition is essential
