Indications

  • Treatment of acute otitis media caused by specific microorganisms
  • Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by specific microorganisms
  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis caused by specific microorganisms
  • Treatment of community acquired pneumonia caused by specific microorganisms
  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by specific microorganisms

  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by specific microorganisms
  • Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by specific microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Cefpodoxime as an oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Stability to beta lactamases
  • Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria
  • Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
  • Excretion of Cefpodoxime in urine
  • Effective against specific gram-positive bacteria
  • Effective against specific gram-negative bacteria

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for adults and adolescents for various infections
  • Dosage for infants and pediatric patients for specific infections
  • Dosing intervals for patients with renal dysfunction
  • Dose adjustment for patients with liver cirrhosis

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids
  • Interaction with H 2 blockers
  • Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid
  • Concomitant use with nephrotoxic drugs

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Incidence of side effects including diarrhea, nausea, fungal infections, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, cough
  • Higher incidence of fungal skin rash in children

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Animal trial results for teratogenicity and embryocidal effects
  • Lack of adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excretion of Cefpodoxime in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Reduced dose in patients with reduction in urinary output
  • Caution in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Risk of overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Need for repeated evaluation of patient’s condition
